People of Independence – Advocacy in Action

Last March, The People of Independence sent representatives to the annual Disability Advocacy Day in Columbia. The representatives brought with them letters written by our consumers and their families describing their need for supports as well as their gratitude for those supports. The People of Independence met with our legislators and gave them the letters to read.

The advocates impressed upon our representatives the importance of these services and supports as they were making state budget decisions. Their work did have an impact as the 2012 state budget did not make any major cuts in the funding of services for individuals with life-long disabilities.

This was just one example of a People of Independence activity. During their meetings, they work on developing their self advocacy skills so their voice can be heard and their rights protected.

The People of Independence welcomes new members and want to see their organization grow.  Please check out the POI page on this website and make plans to join us for our next meeting – we look forward to meeting you!
